He would not have left if he did not so desire. Even if he did, he still would have felt bound to his duty of bringing salvation to the patients of the ward.
McMurphy didnt leave the ward because he knew that if he did then everything would have gone back to the way it was before, where Big Nurse had complete control. By doing that he would have just been wasting his time trying to help out the patients and he would have let them down.
I visualize the whole battle to be like a balance. Currently, McMurphy is the feather which determines the winner. When he gave up and began sucking up to Big Nurse, Cheswick died. When he went back to the patients, Big Nurse was pushed.
I think McMurphy didn't leave because he felt obligated to stay and help the other patients win the battle against Big Nurse. He knew that if he left, everything would probably fall back into the way it was before he got there.
Also, tying into the Jesus-McMurphy comparison, Jesus knew there was a certain time when he would have to leave/die, so until then he wanted to help his disciples grow in their faith and help other people with their problems. Maybe McMurphy also knew that in the end, if he left he would just come back anyway, and if that whole cycle continued, he'd wind up dying at the hospital anyway. So he just decided to stay behind and help the other patients as much as he could.
If Mcmurphy chose to leave, the ward woulod most likely return to normal, and mcmurphy, as being compared to jesus throughout the novel, needed to die anyways in oreder to complete the allusion
McMurphy, as a Christ figure, had to save the patients. So he couldn't leave until he had done so. Also, if McMurphy had ran away, it would have been like giving up in his battle against Big Nurse. And the book wouldn't have been as good if McMurphy just left.
i think mcmurphy didnt leave because he wanted to help the patients fight big nurse. if he left, he wouldnt have been seen as a hero and big nurse would regain control
I think that McMurphy didnt leave because he believed that he was the other patients only hope. He knew that without him everything would stay the way it was when he arrived and he didnt want to simply "live through" that nonsense. He wanted to defy the rules and show everyone that change is possible and that the Big Nurse could be overruled. He didnt want to be the guy to give up or fly through things without a care...he knew that something had to be done and he was the one to do it. Also, this made him the christ figure that he is....because not only was he a sacrifice to better things but he also played the role of "savior"
McMurphy didn't leave the ward because he knew he had no choice.. It was his fate to stay in there and be the "savior" who died for a greater cause, it was written on the stars... well not on the stars because Kesey was the one who wrote it :p but McMurphy's fate had been decided by a greater force-his author and creator lol
McMurphy chooses not to leave because, in a way, it is a safe place for him (besides Big Nurse). In the ward he had 'friends' and didn't have to work. If he left he'd either go to jail or be on the run, both of which require him to put forth 'work'.
McMurphy does not leave the ward because he feels obligated to stay. Much like Jesus in the bible felt obligated to to help the people even if it meant the death of him, McMurphy feels obligated to help the others even though he knows it might lead to his death,. McMurphy is a smart, and coniving character if he had wanted to leave he could have many times. I think besides his desire to help the men on the ward one of the reasons he stays is because of is ego. If he left he could never brag to anyone about how he defeated Big Nurse and instead of being a hero he would be a coward. Knowing this and realizing that his new friends need him is the reason I think McMurphy decided to stay.
McMurphy, being the character that he is, could never bring himself to leave the ward after he got into this battle with Nurse Ratched. He was a leader to his people (the patients) and therefore could never bring himself to leave even when he had the opportunity to escape to freedom and his old life. McMurphy simply could not leave his friends at the ward with Big Nurse, because then even he knew things would return to normal. The only way out for McMurphy was his death.
Mcmurphy did not leave the ward because he felt compelled to continue helping the others on the ward. As some have said before, things would have gone back to the way they were. Mcmurphy being Mcmurphy had to stay and fight the battle; he had to win or die trying.
Agh. Half an hour late. I really think that McMurphy did not leave because he felt compelled to liberate the rest of the patients from the restrictions and 'chains' Big Nurse had imposed on them. McMurphy had to teach the men of the ward what it was to think for oneself and experience human emotions. He had to be a savior figure to all of them, and leaving would have caused everything to revert to what it originally was.
McMurphy is simply too proud. His "game" with Big Nurse turns into something bigger, something he can't just give up and walk away from. He has to see it through till the very end, right up until every single man in the ward has enough confidence to walk out on their own. And eventually, his pride is his downfall.
Heheheheh...I guess this is sorta late...have pity on me Mrs. Zavitz pleease!!
